Ellen Eccles Theatre Architectural Design

The theatre was constructed with reinforced exterior walls and a concrete balcony with steel, a new technique. It was built to house vaudeville and traveling shows as well as films. Films were the major attraction at the theatre for over fifty years. The proscenium measures 36 feet wide and 27 feet high. At the center top of the proscenium is the face of Euterpe, muse of music, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory). The stage is 30 feet wide, 38 ½ feet deep and 65 feet high. The restoration included expanding the theatre and adding a three-story annex, to make room for two loading docks and a prop staging area, dressing rooms, costume shop, and rehearsal space. Seats became wider and rows further apart. House capacity went down from over 1,300 to 1,100. All new lighting, stage rigging and sound systems were added.  The former projection room underneath the balcony became one of several lighting positions. A new concession counter was constructed. Upstairs in the balcony, the restoration involved raising the ceiling, new chandeliers and two more restrooms.
