Coppelia, a fairy-tale love story between Swanilda and Frantz intertwines with unexpected events as the village doll maker Doctor Coppelius endeavors to create a life size doll with a soul. This much-loved ballet with a hint of European folklore is one of the most delightful, well known ballets and continues to please audiences’ world wide. Our story is based on E.T. Hoffman’s Der Sandman and is delightfully choreographed to the lively music of Leo Delibes. We join the village at a dance where Swanilda is looking for Frantz. When she finds him, he is making eyes at Coppelia. Swanilda becomes very jealous and refuses to participate in the festivities. Frantz unaware of Swanilda’s observations is very confused, because Coppelia continues to ignore his requests for a dance. The Bergermister announces to all that a festival to honor the new town bell will be held and each girl getting married that day will receive a dowry. Each girl is given a shaft of wheat, if they hear the grains rattle, their love is true and they will marry. To Swanildas dismay, her wheat is silent. Already questioning Frantz’s love for her, Swanilda calls off the engagement. Thinking Swanilda no longer loves him, Frantz decides to woo Coppelia. Later that evening, Swanilda and her friends enter Doctor Coppelius’s shop and find several life sized dolls. They soon determine that Coppelia is nothing but a doll and laugh over Frantz’s infatuation with her. Doctor Coppelius enters and shoos everyone out, except Swanilda, who is hiding in the cupboard with Coppelia. To play a trick on Doctor Coppelius, Swanilda decides to dress up as Coppelia. Frantz jumps through the window and after a highly amusing chase with the Doctor in pursuit, Frantz confesses his love for Coppelia. To celebrate, the Doctor and Frantz have a few too many drinks and soon Frantz is sleeping. Doctor Coppelius then brews a magic potion to bring Coppelia (really Swanilda) to life. Swanilda plays along but soon grows tired of the game and reveals her true identity. Doctor Coppelius is very disappointed with the turn of events, however, Frantz, who has now awakened, is delighted to learn that Swanilda is the girl he truly loves. The festival day opens with the Dance of Dawn and villagers gather to celebrate the new town bell and witness the marriages of their friends including Swanilda and Frantz. The village girls collect their dowries as they marry and the village celebrates the happiness of the newlyweds. ABOUT CVCB The Cache Valley Civic Ballet company has been performing since 1982.
